Book and Lyrics by Dick Vosburgh
Music by Frank Lazarus
Additional Music & Lyrics by Jerry Herman
Directed by Ted Kopulos
Musical Director Michael Johnson
Tap Choreographer Geri Carlson Sauls
Produced by Marilyn Vaillancourt
A show in two parts, A Day in Hollywood
features songs, sketches, and dance numbers all performed by a chorus
of ushers and usherettes at Gruman's Chinese Theater back in the 1930s.
Many of the pieces have to do with the great musicals of the silver
screen, along with such ephemera as a musical homage to film clichés
and a tap salute to the 1930 Production Code governing on-screen sex
and violence. The second half, A Night in the Ukraine, features a
pastiche of Marx brothers comedies. It is set in the stately mansion of
Mrs Pavlenko, a wealthy Ukrainian widow and introduces the audience to
character types as featured in the Marx Brothers' films.
